PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE
We are having a relatively quiet month, but are busy laying the groundwork for an exciting year of programing. On September 15th, we will have a kickoff meeting that will be a social gathering. Please note that this is a Sunday brunch so that members of all ages will be able to attend. Details about time and location will be sent out when finalized.
The Township Council, at its September 9th Meeting, will issue a proclamation supporting National Voter Registration Day (September 17th). We hope you can attend this meeting to hear this proclamation and be part of a “photo op.”
The fall election season also bring local elections. It appears that there will be three candidates for two seats on the Livingston Board of Education. (Three candidates have filed petitions to run, but one is unsure whether she will actually run,) If the seats are contested, we will hold a candidate’s debate on October 16th. If it is uncontested, we will hold a forum to meet the candidates and provide an informal opportunity to ask them questions. Since the Township Council race is uncontested, we will also provide an opportunity to meet the candidates running for that position.
Membership
We are gearing up for the new membership year and will be sending membership letters by email soon. We welcome new member Brenda Beavers.
Voter Service
We registered voters at the National Council of Jewish Women Back2School Fair in Millburn. It was an inspiring event and there was a great deal of interest in registering and voting and we made some good connections. Thanks to all who pitched in and helped at our table.
With a major national election looming, we will be holding several voter registration and education activities for which we will need volunteers. September 17th is National Voter Registration Day and we are a co-sponsor of the National Council of Jewish Women’s “Power Up the Vote” Community Civic Astion Day. We will be registering voters there (at Temple B’nai Jeshurun, Short Hills, 11 AM- 2 PM) and participating in other civic engagement activities. Please let us know if you can help out.
We also need volunteers for the other voter registration events on the calendar, the Welcome to Livingston event on September 16th and the Livingston Community Block Party on September 29th. (This event, sponsored by the Livingston Police Department used to be the “National Night Out”). Please let us know if you can help out at these events.
Stay tuned for information about other voter registration activities.
