PRESIDENTS’ MESSAGE
September is upon us. We hope you all had a wonderful summer. On September 15th, we will have a kickoff meeting that will be a social gathering at Paris Baguette. We urge you to come and meet other League members and enjoy their refreshments. Feel free to bring a friend.
The Township Council, at its September 9th Meeting, will issue a proclamation supporting National Voter Registration Day (September 17th). We hope you can attend this meeting to hear this proclamation and be part of a “photo op.”
The fall election season also bring local elections. We will hold a candidate’s debate on October 16th if there is a contested Board of Education election. If it is uncontested, we will hold a forum to meet the candidates and provide an informal opportunity to ask them questions.
Membership
It is that time of year,,,, time to rejoin and send in your membership dues. You can do this on our website: https://www.livingstonlwv.org/ or contact us if you want a mail-in form and envelope. We also welcome donations in addition to your regular dues. You can also rejoin in person at our September 15th event at Paris Baguette.
We welcome new member Cassandra Porter.
Voter Service
We are making a final push to register as many voters as possible and there are quite a few
upcoming opportunities to do so. We’ve been registering and helping senior citizens at various senior facilities in the area. Thank you to Judith Friedman for organizing these events and to volunteers Joan Balash, Lisa Sands and Gella Seiden for helping out. We are working on arranging dates to register voters at the Jewish Community Housing Corporation senior facilities and we will be seeking volunteers for that. We will send the details as they are available.
We have several other events coming up for which we are seeking volunteers. September 17th is National Voter Registration Day and we are a co-sponsor of the National Council of Jewish Women’s “Power Up the Vote” Community Civic Action Day. We will be registering voters there (at Temple B’nai Abraham, Livingston, 11 AM- 2 PM) and participating in other civic engagement activities. Please let us know if you can help out. We would appreciate donations of stamps and/or postcards. You can drop them off at Amy Ipp’s house, 101 Martin Road, Livingston or bring them on September 15th.
We also need volunteers for the other voter registration events on the calendar, the Welcome to Livingston event on September 16th and the Livingston Community Block Party on September 29th. (This event, sponsored by the Livingston Police Department used to be the “National Night Out”). Please let us know if you can help out at these events.
We have been asked to represent the league and register and educate attendees at several events at NJIT in Newark. They include Campus Club Fair on September 4th, Non-profit Expo on September 13th and Career Fair on September 29th. Please let Amy or Robin know if you can help at any of these.
Stay tuned for information about other voter registration activities.
Voter Girl
The Girl Scout Council of Northern NJ asked the League to help them educate girls on democracy in the lead up to the presidential election. An event will be held on Saturday, Oct 19th. LWVNJ requested volunteers from Northern NJ to help out with mock elections and civics workshops. Both activities will assist approximately 120 Girl Scouts at various level to earn badges. Training and curriculum will be provided. We have helped out at
this event in the past and it was a rewarding experience.
When: Saturday, October 19th 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. (volunteers come 9 a.m.)
Where: Jockey Hollow Girl Scout Camp in Mendham
